The Lancia Delta S4 was a fearsome Group B rally machine introduced in late 1985, designed to replace the rear-wheel-drive 037 and compete directly with the all-wheel-drive Audi Quattros and Peugeot 205 T16s. It featured a sophisticated mid-mounted 1,759 cc engine that was both turbocharged and supercharged (twin-charged) to eliminate lag and provide massive power across the rev range—officially around 480–550 hp in race trim, though tests showed it could handle far more. Built on a tubular spaceframe with a lightweight carbon fiber and Kevlar body, the S4 weighed under 1,000 kg and could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly 2.5 seconds on gravel, making it one of the fastest rally cars ever built. Despite its incredible speed and winning its debut event, the S4's legacy is tragic; a fatal crash involving Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto at the 1986 Tour de Corse led directly to the banning of Group B rallying.
