The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, prepared by the factory Ralliart team, made its World Rally Championship (WRC) debut in the 1999 season. Piloted by legendary driver Tommi Mäkinen, the car was an immediate success, winning on its debut in Monte Carlo and propelling Mäkinen to a record-setting fourth consecutive World Rally Drivers' Championship title that year. The Evo VI competed as a Group A rally car and was the last of its kind to achieve such a high level of success before the sport fully transitioned to the purpose-built World Rally Car (WRC) class, which made it harder for the Evo to compete in later seasons. This success cemented the Evo VI's legacy as an iconic rally machine and marked a peak for Mitsubishi's Ralliart motorsport division.
